Figure 25: Foodservice Spending by Income Quintile, 2024

Average annual spending on food away from home (dining out) vs food at home (grocery) per consumer unit, by income quintile. The highest-income households spend 4.3x more dining out than the lowest. The share of food dollars going to restaurants rises with income — but even at the top, grocery spending also increases substantially. The consumers in the middle quartiles are the crab restaurant segment: they dine out regularly but are also the most price-sensitive group.
